indira Gandhi (1917–1984) was the first and, to date, only woman to serve as Prime Minister of India. She served as Prime Minister from 1966–1977 and again from 1980–1984. She played an important role in Indian politics, including during the 1971 India-Pakistan War, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. She was assassinated on 31 October 1984 by two of her security guards.
